La sua costruzione fu voluta da Cosimo I de&#8217; Medici per porre una difesa sul lato nord dello stato granducale e dare aiuto alle popolazioni locali, continuamente assalite e depredate da bande armate ed eserciti provenienti dall&#8217;Italia settentrionale. La sua costruzione, affidata all&#8217;architetto Baldassarre Lanci, inizio&#8217; nel 1569 e termino&#8217; nel 1608 sotto il regno di Ferdinando I. La Fortezza di San Martino e&#8217; ritenuta una delle piu&#8217; estese fortificazioni italiane di tutti i tempi: in pratica si tratta di un colle fortificato con i bastioni che si adattano perfettamente alla conformazione del suolo.
